choosing btwn a single variable font file and loading multiple static weights is a huge trade-off for performance. using font-variation-settings: 'wght' 450; allows for much more fluid typography across different viewport sizes. it saves on requests but can be a nightmare for layout shifts if the fallback isn't perfect .

the layout shift is the real killer, so i usually just pre-load a similar static weight to minimize that flash of unstyled text.
