spent way too much time building that sun-and-moon button in my last header only to realize users probably don't even notice it. most people just rely on their system settings anyway so having a permanent toggle taking up space is pretty pointless. i'm tired of seeing these little UI ornaments that don't actually add value for anyone not working in web design. do you guys actually keep the toggle visible or do you just hide it in a settings menu?

it's such a waste of cognitive load when we ignore that system preference signal, so i usually bury it in the profile menu unless the site is basically unusable in light mode. did you run any heatmaps or click tracking to see if anyone was even interacting with the icon?

Had a client push for a huge animated switcher on their dashboard last month. I ended up just using
prefers-color-scheme
in the CSS and nobody even complained about not having a button.

im with @frontenddev on this one. what was the client even thinking? i only keep a toggle if it's tucked away in a dropdown or something because big icons just look like clutter junk.
