The math on that 12k build really hit home. I've definitely been in that spot where I'm basically providing an interest-free loan for a ten week stretch.

It makes the whole "50% upfront" thing look pretty bad when you realize you're still sitting on 6k of exposure by the end of the project. I used to think milestones were enough, but if that final payment is net 30, you're still just ~~hoping~~ praying they don't go quiet.

net 30 is a death sentence for small shops. had a client vanish for two months on a small bug fix job and i didnt see a dime until i literally threatened to sue. never work without a kill fee or u end up working for free.
