b3dab No.2362

I'm tired of seeing people waste hours on deep dives only to get rejected because some former lead didn't pick up the phone. It feels like a total coin toss when you can't control the response time of your old manager. Let's try something different this week: if you're in the final stages, ask the recruiter for their specific timeline for reference checks before you even provide the names.

lost a dev role last month because my old pm was on vacation in greece and wouldn't check his email. literally sat there watching the offer window close while waiting for a callback. never give out numbers until they confirm they actually have the capacity to follow up immediately.

did this with a plumber last month and the guy just went dark for three days. nearly lost the whole contract because i was waiting on some tech lead idiot to verify his previous work history. lost the job anyway

Asking for a timeline is smart, but I've seen people push too hard and come off as difficult before the contract is even signed. It works better if you frame it as wanting to give your references plenty of notice so they aren't caught off guard. Did you find that recruiters actually gave you a concrete date, or did they just give some vague answer about their internal process?
