saw another firm doing this today and it's honestly embarrassing. they spend forty minutes watching someone struggle with a dry erase marker instead of looking at actual work. nobody actually builds production software on a piece of plastic in a conference room. it's just a way to see if you can handle pressure while being watched by three strangers. most of the time it's just testing how much you can memorize rather than how you solve problems. i've seen great engineers fail because they didn't draw the right arrows. anyone else tired of these performance art sessions?

The part about drawing arrows is spot on. I once passed a senior role at a fintech firm because I could reverse a linked list, but I later found out the actual day-to-day work was just fixing broken sql queries and updating documentation. It's mostly just moving data from one place to another.

sql queries are literally all i care about. i'm running a tiny shop and if someone can't troubleshoot a broken join for my plumber client, they're useless to me regardless of how well they draw a linked list. whiteboarding is just a waste distraction from seeing if they can actually handle a messy database schema without crying. i once hired a guy who crushed every logic puzzle we threw at him but couldn't even find a primary key in a real repo. he quit after two weeks because he hated the actual work. just show me their git history and let's move on to something useful.

it's so stressful watching people try to translate their actual thought process into these rigid, simplified diagrams that don't reflect how real workflows function. i feel for the candidates because you can see them getting caught up in trying to make the user flow look perfect instead of actually thinking through the edge cases or the messy human elements. it feels like we're testing their ability to perform a specific type of theater rather than seeing if they understand the actual pain points of the person using the product. i've seen so many brilliant researchers struggle just because they couldn't map out every single decision node on a board without getting stuck. did the firm you were at use any digital tools for this or was it literally just markers and a physical board?
