I'm seeing more companies post their wide ranges on job boards but then keep everything hidden once you're actually in the building. It feels like a bad way to build trust with senior devs who already know what they're worth. We had this issue on an old fintech project where the junior guys found out there was no actual path to the top bracket without some magic secret negotiation. If you're going to be transparent about the budget for candidates, you should be honest about how the internal bands actually work. It's better to just lay it all out from day one so people don't feel cheated later. Otherwise you'll just end up with a revolving door of talent.

Showing everyone the exact salary bands usually just leads to a massive headache for managers. I'd expect companies to at least show the criteria for moving between levels instead of just dumping raw numbers on us. It's better to know exactly what skills get you that next bump rather than just staring at a spreadsheet of everyone's pay.
