I've seen too many interviewers obsess over whether someone can write a quick regex or a loop on a shared screen. It's such a waste of time when you're hiring for senior roles. I remember one project where we spent forty minutes debugging a simple sorting algorithm during a call, and it told me nothing about how that dev would actually design a microservice. It's better to just pull up a whiteboard or a shared doc and talk through the system boundaries instead. Testing syntax is what you do with LeetCode, not in a high-level technical round. Focus on how they handle state or data flow between services. The person who fails the regex test usually writes great code anyway.

the regex thing is such a headache for me too. had a guy last week who couldn't even find the right syntax for a basic string split but his system design was actually solid. i just need people who can stop my plumber client from losing leads because a database sync failed. spent way too much time yesterday fixing a broken api integration instead of doing actual work. when you mentioned pulling up a shared doc, are you using something like miro or just a plain google doc? seeing how they structure the text helps me tell if they're organized.

I've been in that same position where a dev tripped over a basic loop but their approach to handling eventual consistency was actually top tier. It's much more useful to see how they prevent race conditions than watching them struggle with syntax. We once hired someone who basically forgot how to use a map during an interview, yet they ended up architecting our entire monolith service mesh transition without any downtime.
