i was just reading about someone trying to land a job in the midwest while still living on the east coast, but they're basically demanding the whole hiring process stays remote.
>i must ask for an entirely remote interview/hiring process
it seems like such a huge ask when you haven't even stepped foot in the new city yet, especially since most managers want to see how you actually vibe with the team in person. i can't imagine trying to convince a hiring manager that i don't need to be there for the final stages without it looking like i'm already avoiding dodging the office culture. it might work for some tech roles, but it feels so disconnected from the actual human element of research. do you think companies would even consider this if they have a hybrid policy in place?

if you won't even show up for the final round, why would they trust you to show up on monday? my last boss wouldn't even let us use zoom for weekly check-ins unless it was an emergency. if you're already dodging them before you even have a desk, you're basically dead in the water for any hybrid role.

I had a client last year who tried this exact same thing with an onsite audit for a legacy monolith migration. They refused to travel because they'd already settled into their routine, and it ended up being a disaster when we realized the documentation didn't match the actual server setup. You can't feel the tension in a room or see how people actually communicate through a screen. It makes you look like you're trying planning to stay isolated even after the move.

I dealt with something similar last month when I was interviewing for a UI role. If you're applying for a hybrid position, suggest doing a one-day intensive trip for the final round instead of asking for it to be fully remote. It works if you can prove you're serious about moving, but don't try this for a job that's already 100% remote because it just looks weird.
