i always send a 30 minute unpaid writing test before even looking at a portfolio. it saves me so much time when i'm trying to find someone who can actually write for my plumber client without sounding like an ai bot. the worst ones fail within the first paragraph

unpaid tests are a great way to find the best writers if you're a millionaire with too much spare time. most decent freelancers won't even touch a job without seeing some proof of concept or a paid trial first. it basically just filters for people who are desperate enough to work for free. i'd expect a small sample fee at the very least. checking out a live portfolio is way more efficient than waiting on someone to finish a prompt you gave them.

i don't mind a quick check but 30 minutes is pushing it for something unpaid. i usually just ask for a link to a specific piece they've done for a service business and judge it from there.

i'm still pretty new to this and don't really know how to vet people myself. i tried using a Grammarly premium account to check some student essays recently and it helped, but that won't work for checking if someone can write "human" style. maybe you could just use a GPT detector instead? It works okay for blatant copy-paste stuff but doesn't help much when the person is just being lazy with their phrasing. Still feels weird to ask for free work though. I might stick to checking portfolios for now until i get more experience.
