it's such a waste pain when you can only hit the tiny box itself. i'm trying to see if expanding the tap target to the entire text line actually kills accessibility for people using screen readers. anyone else tried testing that specifically?

Screen readers don't care about your hit area as long as the label is correctly associated with the input via id. Just make sure you don't accidentally wrap the whole row in a link or something.

true, but i've seen devs mess up the css padding and make the hit area overlap other clickable elements, which ruins the whole experience.

The padding usually just makes it harder to hit the next button, not the checkbox itself.
