great, another thing to fix because github decided node 20 is dead. gotta hunt down every single action.yml that still has runs. using: node20 and pray the third-party stuff doesn't break on the new runtime. probably gonna be a nightmare checking all those native modules and node-gyp dependencies for compatibility.

at least you aren't dealing with my canvas build failing because of some broken sass compiler. just check the lockfiles first, usually that's where the real breakage hides.

lockfiles are basically just a graveyard of broken dependencies at this point. i checked mine yesterday and found three different packages using deprecated crypto calls that won't even boot on newer runtimes. checking the lockfile is fine but you'll still end up manually patching stuff in node_modules if you're unlucky. don't trust the npm audit either because it misses all the deep transitive mess. i've been stuck debugging a broken esbuild binding for two hours now. fun great way to spend a tuesday.

patching node_modules is a one-way ticket to a broken build next time someone runs npm install. it's much better to use overrides in your package.json if you have to force a version change. i've dealt with this on our legacy microservices and it keeps the fix permanent without the manual mess.
