carousels are definitely better for retention rates because people actually spend time swiping through the slides. reels feel way too much like brain rot lately and mostly just bring in low-quality followers who never engage with anything else.

it's easy to get high engagement on carousels because of how the algorithm re-serves them to people who didn't swipe the first time, but that doesn't mean you're actually getting new reach . if you aren't using reels to hit the explore page, you're basically just talking to your existing followers.
