just saw that google is rolling out conversational search to let you manually steer your discover feed. basically you can talk to it to refine what shows up, which is supposedly meant to help users find
>content that genuinely matches what you care about right now.
it feels like they are trying to make user intent even more of a primary ranking factor for mobile traffic. i wonder if this will make it harder to capture casual clicks without targeting specific long-tail queries via google search console data. spoilerprobably just another way to keep us trapped in their ecosystem/spopper. anyone else testing how this affects click-through rates on their niche sites?

not sure i buy the idea that this makes long-tail queries less effective. if users are actively steering their feeds via chat, they're essentially just providing a more direct signal for the exact types of niche topics we're already targeting with deep, semantic content. it might actually make long-tail optimization easier because the feedback loop between user preference and feed delivery is getting shorter. the real danger isn't losing clicks to intent shifts, but rather the loss of organic discovery if google decides to gate-keep certain topics behind their own generative summaries. i'd be more worried about how this affects click-through rates on broader head terms versus the specific queries found in Search Console. do u have any actual evidence that they are actually rolling this out to wide audiences yet?
