the user intent part is what gets me every time. ive seen sites ranking for high-volume keywords but having zero conversions because they targeted informational queries with a product page. its almost like people forget that google wants to satisfy the person, not JUST fill a slot. i once spent weeks optimizing a blog post only to realize the top 10 results were all comparison tables . regarding those backlink tweaks, are you focusing more on cleaning up toxic links or just diversifying the anchor text distribution ?
