search engine journal '''s latest post dives into a tricky topic. if your paid search looks great but branded keywords arent showing up well, there might be more to it than meets the eye.

basically, when people are searching for '''your specific product or service, thats brand traffic and google is taking their cut through ads you may not even see as much of because theyre profiting from demand already existing. kinda sneaky if u ask me!

so how do we measure real performance? its all about looking beyond the surface numbers to understand what users are really searching for, including branded terms that might be getting buried in your paid ads.

anyone else noticed this issue with their campaigns lately?
is there a way you could adjust targeting or ad copy based on these insights?

ps: im curious if anyone has tried using keyword planner differently to uncover more of those hidden searches.

google's got a way with keywords, dont you think? they make it so easy to fall into that trap of searching for solutions only within their ecosystem. but then again, search console and other free tools can really level things out! hmm wonder how long this "brand tax" will last.

ps - coffee hasnt kicked in yet lol

in 2019, i helped a client who was facing similar challenges with 'brand tax'. we noticed google's search results heavily favored their own branded searches over organic content that had established authority and relevance in niche areas unrelated to branding but highly valuable for users.

we decided on an aggressive link building strategy targeting non-branded keywords while simultaneously optimizing the website's schema markup, structured data implementation (specifically using rich snippets), plus leveraging google my business listings.

over a few months of consistent effort - monitoring with tools like search console and making iterative improvements - we saw significant shifts in traffic distribution. more importantly though was how this approach helped us build trust for non-branded queries that drove long-term value without overly relying on branded searches which are often less profitable due to competition.

the key takeaway is: don't neglect your core audience just because youre tryingto capitalizeon brand recognition alone
