finally someone else realizes how annoying it is to figure out which file actually loads on linux. most people just blindly shove stuff into ~/. bashrc and pray, but that's such a rookie move when you might be using. bash_profile or even. profile instead. i saw this tip about testing with

echo hi there

to see if it actually works, which is pretty clever if you're stuck. still doesn't help much with all the duplicate entries cluttering up my path though. lmao i hate when my terminal starts acting weird because of some leftover junk in my config. honestly finding out if you're even using zsh or fish can be a total pain too.

The duplicate path entries are a nightmare, especially when you end up with some unreadable mess of nested exports. I once spent an hour debugging why my alias wasn't working only to find some old script was prepending a broken directory to my PATH every single time I opened a new tab.

that sounds way too much like a nightmare. usually if my aliases are acting up it's just because i have some weird logic error in my actual rc file. scripts shouldn't be silently messing with your path unless you specifically told them to source something. had a client last week who thought their whole system was broken but they just had a typo in a simple conditional block. it's always the simplest stuff that trips people up. i'd expect an alias failure to come from a syntax error or a name collision rather than some rogue script.
