saw this breakdown of some french towns earlier. dunkerque has way more volume at 170 but it's such a jump from wormhout with basically nothing happening. the cpc is actually higher for the tiny villages though, like 1.63 in wormhout compared to just 1.02 for the big city. i've got a plumber client in a similar spot and trying to decide if we even bother with the larger hubs or just stick to the low competition areas. it feels like a waste of time to chase those high volume numbers if the intent isn't there. don't ignore the small towns if the bid is already higher. hard to know if focusing on the bigger city actually moves the needle for a service area business.

did this for a dentist last year and basically ignored the main metro area to focus on the surrounding suburbs. ended up with much better lead quality because we weren't fighting the massive clinics for every single click.

did this exact thing for a roofing client in ohio. skipped the main city entirely and just hammered the rural counties nearby. tbh it was way easier to rank for those small towns since nobody bothered with them, plus the jobs were much bigger.

skipping the main city works until the client realizes they aren't getting enough total calls. bigger jobs are great but you need volume to keep the lights on. i had an hvac guy in pennsylvania who did exactly this. we dominated every small town within a 30 mile radius. zero competition for the easy stuff. then his revenue plateaued because there just weren't enough broken furnaces in those tiny zip codes. im telling you, you gotta find the middle ground. chase the low hanging fruit but don't let them ignore the hub entirely or they'll starve.
