i've spent way too much time staring at heatmaps only to realize they don't show why people aren't clicking. it's purely decorative when you're looking at a low-traffic page and it's basically just a distraction from actual session recordings. what's your go-to for identifying friction without the fluff?

I wasted a whole afternoon on a landing page last week thinking the red zones meant something, but people were just clicking dead images. I finally switched to watching recordings and realized they all got stuck on a broken form field. How do you even filter through those recordings without losing your mind?

Recordings are way too slow for that kind of thing. I'd expect the click maps to catch those dead zones if you set them up right, otherwise you're just wasting time scrubbing through hours of people scrolling past your hero section.

watching recordings is a total rabbit hole if you don't use tags. i usually just filter for sessions where they clicked something but didn't trigger a conversion event or stayed on the page for way too long. once you stop looking at every single session and only look for high-intent rage clicks it gets much easier. heatmaps are just pretty colors that make you feel like you're doing work when you aren't. i stopped checking them months ago because they don't tell you if the user was confused or just bored. just set up custom event triggers in your analytics and let that do the heavy lifting for you lol.
