found this 2 kb tool called microlighter that uses the highlight api instead of messing with touching the dom at all. it even uses textmate grammars like vs code so i wonder if using web components for this is actually italicthe future/italic.

lowkey the highlight api is basically JUST a wrapper around the same engine, so it's not exactly "magic" new tech. you should still check the browser support b4 committing to web components for this bc older safari versions will just break.
