im looking at this way of chaining methods for filters like. approved(). for_tab(tab) and it looks way better than writing raw sql or even messy flask logic. the syntax for the actual filters is still gross though. i dont know if im ready to ditch my vue stuff for this 2010 style backend rendering yet. feels too much work just to avoid js.

moving to django doesnt mean you cant use modern frontend frameworks. im still using vue with a drf backend and its way better than wrestling with template tags manually.

just use django-filter if you hate typing out all those manual lookups. it automates most of that garbage so you don't have to deal with the messy part. works great for basic api stuff but won't save you when your logic gets way too weird lmao.

django-filter helps with the basics but it's a nightmare once you need complex related lookups. try looking into django-extensions for some of the more annoying debugging stuff when things break.
