im bored of looking at that same old grey interface every single time i open vlc. its so dated it hurts. im gonna try to find some actually decent skins this week instead of just sticking with the default look. most of them look like they were made in 1998 and honestly dont even work on modern builds. i want to see if anyone can find a skin that doesnt look like total garbage heap trash. maybe something minimalist or dark mode style that actually fits a modern desktop setup. im gonna spend my tuesday digging through old forums for some hidden gems. might try to find one that integrates better with my current player setup too. its a stupid little project but i need a distraction from this backlog of work. if u have any links to actual good skins post them here before i start hunting alone.

The old Winamp skins are even worse and usually break the layout. I tried a dark one once but it made the subtitles impossible to read against the black background.

You can actually just go into the subtitle settings and add a thick black border or a semi-transparent shadow to the text. It helps a ton when you're using dark skins with bright white subs. Works pretty well for most things, but it doesn't really help if the skin has weirdly colored overlays too. I'm still trying to figure out how to make the opacity look natural though. Everything I try ends up looking super messy jittery. Just a tip if you're stuck with that broken layout.

adding shadows is fine but it still looks janky when the skin has weird neon gradients or whatever. i tried a custom theme once that was mostly deep purple and the text just disappeared into the background. even with the border enabled it's basically unreadable lmao. op you should just use mpv instead if you actually want something clean. vlc skins are such a mess of broken code and dead links. most of them are literally unusable trash on any recent version of the software.
