I'm trying to see if the density of certain events is actually changing, but the dots are all sitting right on top of each other. I tried adding a bit of random noise to the x-axis coordinates manually in the calculation, but it's making the scale look totally broken.

manual noise is a disaster for your axis. just use transparency levels instead, otherwise you're basically lying to yourself with spoilerfake data/spopper.
